What is 23andMe?

23andMe is a DNA testing service that reports variations in your DNA across your entire genome.  Uncovering these variations (mutations and polymorphisms) allows 23andMe data to be used by your doctor to identify genetic variations in nutritional pathways that can contribute to your symptoms.

How Is 23andMe Testing Performed?

To analyze your entire genome, the 23andMe service simply requires a saliva sample. A sample collection kit is ordered from 23andMe, a saliva sample is submitted using the collection kit, and then the sample is returned using the prepaid shipping container in the kit.

What Type of 23andMe Interpretation Is Provided?

At Cascade Integrative Medicine, we focus only on the genetic variations (single nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs) that are common in the general population and are associated with the body’s ability to carry out methylation reactions. Several polymorphisms in genes that encode enzymes involved in methylation have been defined by clinical research and have been shown to affect methylation efficiency in the body.  Methylation pathways are critical for detoxification, cardiovascular health, cognition, neuroprotection, and emotional wellness. The genetic variations revealed in the 23andMe test results can be used to guide targeted supplementation to restore these methylation pathways.
